First off, what is Interaction Design? Here's the fancy definition:

What is interaction design in normal people talk?
A PROCESS
a way of designing that optimises engagement by being informed + supporting the way human’s interact, while highlighting a product idea and value
A DECISION MAKING ACTIVITY
a way of acknowledging trade-offs, alternatives and creating a plan for development, ergonomics and psychology
Interaction Design Methodology
Methodology is a prescribed way to approach a designing process
1- Defines how users can interact with the interface
2- Gives users affordances about behaviours before action is taken
3- Anticipate and mitigate errors
4- Considers system feedback and response times
5- Strategically think about each elements
Where does it come from?
Interaction Design came from the necessity to record, manipulate and communicate information. Some sources say it..“Began in the late 90’s - early 2000’s. Originates in web and graphic design” But really, it was much more ingrained into our every day lives than we think.
Stone tools, Cave Paintings, Language, THE ABACUS, Archiving, Times + Distance, Clocks, Compuses, Calendars, Printing Presses, Difference Engine, Photographs, Telegraph,Telephone, Wireless Radio, The Mundanium, Television, Computers
Wait, so.. what’s the relationship between Interaction Design and UX Design?
UX
Accounts for ALL user facing aspects of a system
Discovers and provides information on who product target users are, does testing
Focused on enjoyment of navigation + flow of website etc.
ixD
Specific to interactions between users and a screen
Works from feedback from users provided by UX Researches
Takes into account who the target user of the product is, how they feel when they’re interacting
I hope that's shed some light on where interaction design comes from.
